Articles / MC BUSINESS / A Brief Background into the World of Fashion Modeling
There are a lot of stereotypes that spring to mind when individuals think about the world of modeling and what it entails. Fashion modeling is a very prestigious career and line of work for those that are able to break into the industry. Despite all the perks that come with the career, including for some fame and lots of money, it is not always the most stable line of work. While it is high paying and models can make 0 for each hour that they work, or more, a model does not have set hours and guaranteed pay unless he or she is in a contract with a specific client or company that wants to reserve their work for the future. Both males and females are needed in a fairly great demand when it comes to fashion modeling. If a person is interested in becomes a fashion model, there are a few things that they are going to need to keep in mind in order to have a chance at succeeding in this very competitive and often misunderstood world which surrounds fashion modeling.
Agents exist for the use of their models, and this is very important. While models are capable of walking down runways and posing for pictures, there are a lot of technical and administrative duties that go into getting a model into this position, as well as negotiating the model's pay. This is part of what an agent does. They find their models auditions and jobs, and in return they receive a certain percentage of what the model makes from each job that they perform. Clients are the companies, corporations or establishments that hire the models from the agents, and they are very important pieces of the fashion modeling puzzle, because they provide the salaries for the agents and models as well as the need and reason for models. There are a number of different types of clients that need models, including clothing lines, book cover publishers, makeup companies, hair product manufacturers and many more.
Some people are able to secure jobs without the use of an agent. However, when it comes time to negotiate the contract many are advised to get an agent. There are many casting and audition calls that are open, which means that any one can vie for the part. Still, there are a number of more closed auditions in which the clients will simply call certain agencies and ask them to send specific styles of men or women to a specific location for an audition at a set time. This is a very competitive line or work and many clients and agencies are looking for the next big thing. As a result, job security can sometimes be an issue if a person does not have what it takes to be successful in the long run as well as at a time when they are considered to be a hot and demanded commodity. That is what a model is for the most part, a good that can be used by clients in order to get the attention they desire, hopefully leading to an increase in sales.
One of the most obvious lines of work is that the model will work runway shows. These are performed live and in some of the biggest cities of the world. Many models get paid very well in order to perform at these shows, since it is here that they are able to gain recognition and work with some of the most successful clothing designers in the fashion world. There is a height requirement when it comes to fashion models. Women have to be between 5'9" and 6'2" and men also have to be tall. There are no set height and weight limitations or restrictions in place at this time.
